Our 74th Winter Recreation Program of supervised recreational and instructional programs is for children enrolled in the Farmingdale School District. Registration will be online and open one month prior to the program start date. Instructional programs in Swimming, Gymnastics and Cultural Arts are self-sustaining. The registration fee for the programs are as indicated below. No refunds will be issued once the program begins. All registrations for Winter programs will be ONLINE. Registration begins approximately one month before the program start date. SWIMMING / GRADES 2 – 8:
Swimming instruction is for children enrolled in the Farmingdale School District entering grades 2-8 as of September 2024, and meet Saturdays at the Aquatics Center at Howitt Middle School.
There are a total of eight (8) classes per session. The program fee is $70.00 per child. Session times are 10AM, 11AM, or 12PM each lasting one hour.

S.N.A.P. (SPECIAL NEEDS AQUATICS PROGRAM)
SNAP is designed for students with special needs ages 6-16 as of September 2024, and meet Saturdays from 2-3PM at the Aquatics center at Howitt Middle School.
SNAP is for special needs students who DO NOT know how to swim and are enrolled in the Farmingdale school district. The program will introduce non-swimmers to basic safety swimming skills. An adult over the age of 21 is required to accompany the student swimmer in the pool at all times. There are a total of eight (8) classes per session. The program fee is $70.00 per child.

TINY TOT SWIM
“Tiny Tots" swim is for children enrolled in the Farmingdale School District ages 1 to 6, and meet Saturdays at the Aquatics Center at Howitt Middle School.
Tiny Tots session is from 9-10AM or 1-2 PM. Tiny Tots MUST be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian in the pool at all times. Tiny Tots swim is a fun water orientation program designed to acquaint children with water. Skills introduced will include: blowing bubbles, floating, kicking, and safety skills and optional underwater swim.

GYMNASTICS
FOR GRADES 1-8 / 4:00-5:45PM at Woodward Parkway. There are 2 sessions offered, one in the Fall and one in the Winter.
In this class you will learn the basics of gymnastics using various apparatuses. Leotards can be worn but are not required, children should wear comfortable gym attire and socks.
You can choose to attend one day a week, either Tuesdays or Thursdays for $70.00 or both days for $140.00. There are 8 classes or 16 classes per session.
There is a homework room available for students at 3pm at Woodward Parkway. Registration online for the homework room will be closed the day before the session begins, so you must register in advance in order to be on the roster, otherwise you will need to call the office to register which may delay participation. The fee is $25 for Tuesdays or Thursdays only. The fee is $50 for both Tuesdays & Thursdays. **Transportation is NOT provided from other schools to Woodward Parkway.**

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (ASL)
ASL FOR GRADES K-3 / 9:00-10:00AM
During the sessions students will begin to explore sign language through hands on practice interwoven with some arts and crafts. Students will learn the letters of the alphabet in order to spell their names and simple sight words. Students will also learn word signs for animals, colors, and objects. Throughout the course students will learn to sign a simple story which will be presented during a culminating activity to which family and friends will be invited. Students will also leave with a small booklet of sign language worksheets that will help them to practice and develop their budding skills at home.
ASL FOR GRADES 4-9 / 10:00-11:00AM
During the sessions students will begin to explore hands on practice of sign language with the goal of beginning conversational skills. Students will be exposed to general history of American Sign Language. Students will be challenged to not only learn their alphabet but also general signs that can be used in a simple conversational exchange. Throughout the course students will learn the signs to a song/story which will be presented during a culminating activity to which family and friends will be invited. Students will also leave with a small booklet of sign language worksheets to help them to further practice and develop their beginning sign skills.

Chess & Checkers
FOR GRADES 3-8 / 10:30AM – 12:00PM
This new program will run for 9 weeks on Saturdays. During the session students will be able to learn how to play chess or checkers. If students already know how to play chess or checkers, they will be able to play against other participants.

DRAWING & SKETCHING
FOR GRADES 3-8 / Beginner 9:00-10:00AM or Advanced 10:05-11:05AM
Beginner/Intermediate 9:00-10:00AM
A course designed to introduce the young artist to the various beginner steps of drawing/sketching. Students will get a taste of topics such as mark making, contour line sketching, blind contour line sketching and shading. These exercises are designed to train the beginner to use full powers of observation and “both sides of the brain" while drawing. All drawings will be done in pencil. Materials are supplied in class.
Intermediate/Advanced 10:05-11:05AM
A course designed to bring the beginning steps of drawing/sketching together. These young artists will be introduced to the composition of art making through thumbnail sketches, shading, still lifes, portraiture and figure drawing. These exercises will allow the students to use concept development as a source of art using both sides of the brain at once. All drawings are done in pencil. Materials are supplied in class. (Photos may be needed for self portraiture segment of the class).

GROUP PIANO
FOR GRADES 3-12/ 10:00-11:00AM
This course will introduce basic theory to enable students to play simple tunes with chord harmonization. Students must have a piano for daily practice. Class will be limited to six students. Each student has a 10 minute individual session.

PRE-K
9:30AM- 12:00PM at Woodward Parkway. There will be 2 sessions offered in the Fall and Winter.
This program is for 4 year-olds entering kindergarten in September 2025. This program provides opportunities for creative and imaginative group experience, self-expression, and cultural awareness. Activities include exploration with art materials and a planned environment of play experience, story time, music and rhythms. Class size is limited. Child must be potty trained. Please pack a nut-free snack and drink for your child.

SAMPLER -ARTS & CRAFTS
FOR GRADES K-2 / 10:15AM- 11:45AM
“Sampler" is a class designed to introduce the young child to each of the areas of the Cultural Arts Program. This course is especially good for the child who likes to make crafts as well as art projects. Occasionally, a little music and movement will be included to give the children an opportunity to stretch and move in the gym or playground area. We will usually read a story during the lesson for added fun! Child must be potty trained.

SEWING
FOR GRADES 3-12 / 9:30- 11:00 AM, 11:00AM- 12:30PM or 1:00- 2:30PM at Howitt Middle School
Participants will have 90 minutes of instruction. Class size will be limited to 16 students per class with 2 instructors. The program will conclude with a fashion show on March 15, 2025 at Woodward Parkway in the Auditorium.
Participants will create a variety of projects through the use of patterns, hand sewing and sewing machines. This program is geared towards all levels.

Winter recreation is for children enrolled in the Farmingdale School District entering grades 1- 8 as of September 2024, and meets weekly on Saturdays from November 2024 through March 2025.
Varied program of recreational activities including quiet games, basketball, whiffle ball, kickball, and arts & crafts are offered.

Classes meet on Tuesday & Thursday nights in the wrestling room at Farmingdale High School.
Requirements: Participants must complete 8 classes in order to participate in the in-house tournament on March 6, 2025. Please wear a white T-shirt & gym shorts to class. You may bring water.
